According to statistics compiled by the National Cancer Institute, for men with prostate cancer, the expected 5-year survival rate is nearly 100% and the 10-year survival rate is 91%.
With increased awareness of the importance of early detection, PSA screening, and continuing improvements in treatment, the survival rates for prostate cancer continue to show improvement over time. The number of prostate cancer deaths have actually decreased 64%
over the past decade, despite an increase in the number of men in the at risk age groups.
For men who are diagnosed today, your chances of long term survival, with a great quality of life, are a cause for hope not despair.
If you have been diagnosed, you are not alone. Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 200,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. This number is rising largely because the baby boom generation is now reaching the age where prostate cancer is more prevalent. An average American man has a one in six chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.
The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but because of its prevalence, there have been tremendous strides made in the treatments that combat this all too common disease in men. In the sidebar at the left, you can see that the long-term survival rates for those that are diagnosed with prostate cancer are very encouraging.
